Rathrush Green Energy Park – a project for our time

Overview

Solving our energy problem needs energy storage

Rathrush Green Energy Park (RGEP) is a proposed Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) facility which will store green energy made from surplus renewable energy that would otherwise be lost.

The project will use this surplus renewable energy at times when demand is low and/or our electricity system doesn't have the capacity to take what is being generated. This energy will be used to generate green hydrogen which will then be stored on-site, deep underground in lined rock caverns and later converted to electricity to be deployed at a time that it is needed.

The project will save an estimated 180,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per annum and can advance Ireland towards complete energy independence. This equates to taking approximately 40,000 cars off the road.

The project presents an important as well as timely solution to the current pressing and complex energy dilemma facing the country, both in terms of security of supply and decarbonising our grid.

Moreover, by harnessing an energy source which was heretofore being wasted, consumers can be insulated from future fossil fuel crises and price shocks such as we saw in the recent conflict in the Middle East as well as the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. By delivering a national solution helping Ireland on its journey to energy independence, it simultaneously provides reassurance and confidence for high-end electricity users seeking to locate here.

Did you know?

Rathrush Green Energy Park will have the capacity to provide:

30 times more green energy storage than Turlough Hill

seven times more generation capacity than Ardnacrusha

Rathrush Green Energy Park is a project for our time. It is a first of its kind in this country, using Long Duration Energy Storage or LDES at this scale. With climate change dominating both the national and global news and political agenda, the project can be a game-changer for Ireland. It can also be a crucial piece of the jigsaw in the increasingly urgent need to wean ourselves off fossil-fuel generated electricity in a practical, clean and safe fashion.
