Ireland has an enormous renewable energy resource and the technology to capture it is well proven and cost effective. The country is wealthy with a low population density and a moderate climate. Solar energy and batteries are plummeting in price. Electric vehicles and heat pumps are around three to four times more efficient than petrol engines and gas boilers. Therefore, the volume of energy Ireland needs in future can be greatly reduced.

The land, the sea, the skills, resources and finance are available to build enough wind and solar. The only piece that is missing is the ability to “time shift” the production of the wind and solar so that we have renewable energy available on a 24/7 basis. That is what the Rathrush Green Energy Park can deliver. By storing much larger quantities of green energy for much longer than was previously possible, it is possible to bridge the gap between supply and demand.

Ireland already has an ageing fleet of approximately 30 conventional fossil power stations, many of which are nearing the end of their useful life and will need to be decommissioned over the coming decade. Rather than replacing those old fossil fuel power stations, building long duration energy storage projects like the Rathrush Green Energy Park would be sufficient to wean Ireland off its fossil fuel over-dependence. This would make Ireland 100% self-sufficient in electricity with zero carbon emissions.

This green electricity will in turn enable us to eliminate oil from the transport sector using electric vehicles and the heat sector using heat pumps and electric boilers. None of this is new, the technologies are available and cost effective already and this vision is already government policy. The missing link is the long duration energy storage - the key to making our abundant wind and solar available every hour of every day of every year. Rathrush Green Energy Park is the first critical step to that future.
