Project
Strategic site selection

The proposed site is located in the townlands of Rathoe and Rathrush just outside the village of Rathoe in Co Carlow.

How the proposed facility would look from an easterly vantage point
The site was chosen because of significant locational advantages:
The underlying geology consists of granite
Granite provides high stability and low permeability which are critical design factors for the project. Similar geological conditions exist at Turlough Hill in Co Wicklow which were crucial to the delivery of the pumped storage hydro-electric facility located there.
Proximity to a 220kV grid connection in Kellis
To draw down sufficient surplus renewables from the grid and return it later when the energy is needed, requires a connection at 220kV or higher. The proximity of the 220kV Kellis substation, located approximately two kilometres north-west of the proposed site, means a point of connection to the national grid already exists nearby.
Did you know?
Rathrush Green Energy Park will have the capacity to provide:
30 times more green energy storage than Turlough Hill
seven times more generation capacity than Ardnacrusha

Harnessing surplus wind and solar energy to create clean, sustainable power
