Improving Ireland’s energy security is a critical national objective as set out by Government and the Climate Change Advisory Council. The latter states that “insufficient investment in the electricity grid means that some of the renewable energy we currently generate cannot be used.”

Currently, some 1GW of batteries are connected to the grid but these are all of short duration. To realise this 2030 ambition, it is estimated that LDES capacity will need to reach a minimum of 2.4GW. At present there is only 0.3GW of LDES on the Irish grid. This all comes from a single pumped storage hydro-electric facility at Turlough Hill which was constructed over 50 years ago.

The project will save an estimated 180,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per annum, the equivalent of removing 40,000 cars from our roads. It has the potential to be a game-changer and advance Ireland towards complete energy decarbonisation.

This project enables the regional electricity grid to absorb more renewable energy at times of high renewables to store for later use. This avoids the waste of renewable energy but also delays or avoids the need to build out new grid infrastructure in the region.

Providing security of supply

Harnessing surplus renewable energy

Propelling Ireland towards net zero

Supporting EU/Government policy

Improve effectiveness of our grid

Reduce exposure to EU climate target fines

Propelling Ireland to 100% energy independence

We believe that all aspects of the Community Benefit Fund should be for the good of the local area.
